Billboards on road

Filed under: LED Work Lights — Tags: , — solaroutdoorlight @ 8:49 am

“Five years ago when it rained constantly for 10 hours, a motorcyclist took shelter from rain under a billboard. We carry a extensive line of Parking Lot Lighting inventory. It fell down on him and a few other people who had gathered under it,” recalls Amber Alibhai, a representative of Shehri a not-for-profit organisation which looks into civic problems facing the city. The misery caused by the recent rains in Karachi would have multiplied if these billboards had fallen down.

“In no civilised city are billboards placed on main roads. Not only are they a traffic distraction but also a threat to life if they fall down during a storm or heavy downpour,” she adds.An emergency light is a battery-backed lighting device that comes on automatically when a building experiences a power outage.

At the Ayesha Bawany School on Sharea Faisal putting up a 90-foot tall bill board on the rooftop caused quite a stir among the parents who considered it to be a threat to the life of their children. “What if it fell down on the head of a student?” claimed an anxious parent. The school already has two tall billboards perched at its rooftop. They belong to a brand of paint, which the school spokesperson claims, is owned by the owners.

“The school does not get paid for the two billboards, the paint brand belongs to the school owners,” he said, adding that work for the third billboard came to a halt after the cantonment board ordered against it.

At many places in Gulshan and NIPA, trees have been chopped to make way for billboards.

“From Hasan Square to the bus stand near my house, I used to walk under the shady trees which took up the entire service lane. Recently they have been chopped off and billboards have been placed there instead,” complained Fauzia Ali, a student at Karachi University.

Until recently huge billboards had been erected at the Kothari Parade, which had hid the fa?ade of the beautiful heritage site. Billboards with moving objects such as flash lights are a distraction, drivers claim. Opposite the Regent Plaza on Sharea Faisal, a washing powder company had placed a billboard with the flashing outlines of a water tub. “Sometimes I got so engrossed in looking at it that I missed vehicles,” said Aftab Ahmed, who drives from Saddar to PECHS everyday.

The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has a strict size for billboards. In a pre-monsoon meeting held by former KMC administrator Hashim Raza Zaidi, directives to fix the billboards were given.

“Advertising devices, including billboards, should be installed in such a manner that their size and height doesn’t affect the traffic on roads and corridors and also do not cause accidents,” he had said.

But nothing happened after it. There is no controlling authority to keep a check on billboards in Karachi. It is distributed among the KMC, cantonment boards and the Karachi Development Authority. And that explains the different sizes of billboards spread all over the city. “Each body all has its own rules,” claims Alibhai.

WYNDHAM Vacation Resorts Coffs Harbour is the only Australian finalist in the prestigious “Go Green Awards” which recognise resorts that demonstrate extensive environmental initiatives.

Since placing third in the awards in 2010 Wyndham Coffs Harbour- Treetops has implemented a host of green initiatives, making it a strong contender for this year’s top prize.

The property is now at stage three of its LED lighting upgrades, taking the resort to 50% LED lighting. A second 10Kw solar system was installed this year to reduce energy consumption. Eight new speed controlled pool pumps have also been implemented, leading to an impressive 85% reduction in power costs in the resort’s pump room.

Together these initiatives have seen on average, a consistent 15% reduction in overall power usage.

The resort generates its own fertilizer for its extensive gardens, using a small tractor, a chipper-shredder and two bays for green waste and mulch.

An onsite worm farm assists the process, and is also used to dispose of food scraps. A new program is currently being developed which will also allow guests to contribute to the worm farm.

Apartments feature recycling bins,A solar bulb that charges up during the day and lights the night when the sun sets. water efficient washing machines and dishwashers and environmentally friendly taps and shower heads, while rainwater tanks are used for irrigation on the property.

Children at the resort are encouraged to learn about the environment, with each young guest receiving a “Wynnie and Friends” Adventure pack which includes games and educational material.

The childrens’ characters were developed as part of the highly-successful, companywide Wyndham Green program, which aims to conserve resources, preserve natural habitats and prevent pollution.

Lexus ES300h Hybrid

I enjoyed the ride in any of the modes thanks to the fully independent suspension system.  Up front is a MacPherson strut setup, gas-charged shocks, an anti-roll bar and opposite-wound coil springs that help with straight-line stability at high speeds.  The revised rear suspension features dual-link MacPherson struts and an anti-roll bar to keep body lean to a minimum.  The new rear suspension geometry and improved shock absorber damping characteristics further enhance ride comfort when traveling over poorly paved road surfaces.

Giving back more fun-to-drive excitement is the increased body rigidity that is achieved through the use of more lightweight, high-tensile strength steel, added bracing and more spot welds.  Airflow around and underneath the new ES 300h are underbody panels, a front spoiler, deep side extensions, a rear spoiler and rear diffuser.  It also helps improving stability at high speeds, increases fuel economy and reduces drag.

The co-efficient of drag is just 0.27.  The new ‘L’ design motif of the 300h is reflected in the LED daytime running lamps and combination rear LED lamps.  Foglamps are integrated into the sculpted lower front bumper fascia.  The ES 300h also feature an exclusive rear design with hidden exhaust pipe for a clean look.  Other details specific to the hybrid include blue badging and exclusive 17X7 aluminum alloy wheels wrapped with Bridgestone 215/55R17 inch Turanza low-rolling resistance all-season tires.

Slowing the all-new ES300h down from speed are large four-wheel disc brakes that are regenerative making electric power that is transferred back into the battery pack.  Up front are 11.6 inch vented discs clamped with dual-piston calipers while in the rear are 11 inch solid discs clamped with single-piston calipers.  Keeping control of the car during severe braking situations, like when driving on wet or slick pavement are standard ABS, EBD and BA.  Standard Traction Control and Vehicle Stability Control systems work with the braking systems to ensure the car stops quickly and straight.

The second-generation Remote Touch Interface (RTI) allows you to operate the climate, audio, phone controls, optional navigation system and more.  The screen menus are selected with a controller (like a computer mouse) located on the center console.  RTI also reduces eye and hand movement, helping to decrease effort and distraction.  It takes a little to get used to but it is really neat and intuitive.  Lexus Enform provides seamless connectivity with Bing search, iHeartRadio, OpenTable, Pandora, Yelp and Facebook Places through compatible smart phones.  The standard Lexus Premium Sound system features eight-speakers with automatic sound leveler, in-dash CD player, USB/iPod connectivity, and an integrated SiriusXM satellite radio receiver.

Other standard features inside includes NuLuxe seating and piano black trimmed interior, electrochromic auto-dimming rearview mirror, electrochromic heated outside mirrors, one-touch open/close sunroof, automatic dual-zone climate control system Bluetooth technology, USB audio plug, power windows all express up/down, power door locks, Lexus Personalization settings, carpeted floor mats, four-grab handles, dual map lamps, push button start/stop, intermittent windshield  wipers/washers, dual lighted vanity mirrors, dual cupholders on the center console with a padded armrest and deep storage box, rear pull-down armrest with dual cupholders, remote trunk release and remote fuel filler door.  My test ES 300h came with the optional HID headlights, heated front seats, Hard Disk Drive Navigation system with backup camera, voice command.  Click on their website www.hmhid.com for more information.

Benz CLA from under $50K

Filed under: LED Lamp — Tags: — solaroutdoorlight @ 6:31 am

Mercedes-Benz has announced an Australian starting price of $49,900 plus on-road costs for its CLA-Class compact sedan, making it at least $9000 pricier than the A-Class hatchback upon which it’s based

Opening the batting for the all-new three-variant small sedan line-up is the sub-$50,000 CLA 200, which will be a direct rival for the cheapest version of the first Audi A3 sedan that arrives here priced from about $45,000 in January.

Like the A 200 hatch, the CLA 200 is powered by a 115kW/250Nm 1.6-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine with fuel-saving idle-stop function, which in this case reduces consumption to 5.7L/100km despite an 8.5-second claimed 0-100km/h acceleration figure.

Standard equipment across the CLA range will include a seven-speed dual-clutch automated transmission, nine airbags and a reversing camera.

The CLA 200 offers 18-inch five/twin-spoke alloy wheels, Wholesale xenon headlights, a black diamond grille, power-folding mirrors, LED Lamp Wholesalers, active park assist with parktronic (90-degree and parallel self-parking), twin exhaust outlets, Artico-trimmed sports seats, Becker MapPilot navigation, Audio 20 media interface, colour TFT screen, a leather-clad steering wheel, thermotronic climate-control and blind spot assist.

Moving up to the hitherto unseen CLA 250 Sport costs $63,400 plus on-roads — $13,500 more than the A 250 Sport – but brings the same 155kW/350Nm 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four, which in this case consumes an estimated 6.6L/100km and sprints to 100km/h in 6.7 seconds.

Australians will be among the first in the world to have access to the CLA 250 Sport, which will come standard with a host of AMG-badged extras from the A 250 Sport, including 18-inch AMG wheels, an AMG body kit including silver diamond grille, AMG interior trims and an AMG sports steering wheel.

Also standard will be a panoramic sunroof

, intelligent lighting system, rear privacy glass, red brake calipers, anti-theft alarm, sports seats in black red-cut leather, Artico upper dash and electric heated memory front seats.

Rounding out the range is the piping-hot CLA 45 AMG sports sedan at $86,900 plus ORCs ($12,000 more than the A 45 AMG), which brings all-wheel drive and a 265kW/450Nm 2.0-litre twin-scroll turbo petrol four that consumes 7.0L/100km and can hit 100km/h in just 4.6 seconds – the same as the A 45, AMG’s first four-cylinder model.

The top-shelf CLA scores all of the above, plus 19-inch multi-spoke AMG wheels, the AMG Driver’s Package (with derestricted 270km/h top speed), AMG night (black-out) package, AMG Performance exhaust, a twin-blade grille, distronic plus radar cruise, lane keep assist, metallic paint, AMG performance seats in black red-cut leather, AMG performance steering wheel, COMAND navigation and Harman Kardon Logic 7 audio with digital radio.

First examples of both the CLA 200 and CLA 45 AMG will be available from October 1, while the CLA 250 Sport arrives here on February 1 and a CLA 200 CDI diesel will join the range by mid-2014.

Mercedes-Benz says it will deliver about 200 A 45 AMG and 100 CLA 45 AMG vehicles this year, to an order bank that stretches out to at least February 2014.
