Amidst several teasers that have reached the Interwebs, Volvo revealed their latest concept car due at this Frankfurt Motor Show, which provides the public with a clear eye of the Swedish automaker’s intended trajectory in terms of its corporate design philosophy. Volvos have never really been lookers, the kind that sticks to one’s memories, though this new Volvo Concept Coupe—which the brand touts as the “next-generation P1800”—appears to be putting Volvo’s years of complete obscurity into the past. Because holy wienerschnitzel, just look at it!

For those who need a quick history refresher, the Volvo P1800 was a very iconic and formidable sports car back in the 1960s and even went head-to-head with other icons like the Jaguar E-Type, Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint, the Aston Martin DB4, the BMW E9, Chevrolet Corvette, Mercedes-Benz SL-Class, and the Porsche 911. So despite Volvo’s modern day ho-hum characteristics, the new Volvo Concept Coupe seeks to relish the heritage of the original P1800 into the modern world.

Representative of Volvo’s latest Scalable Product Architecture, which adopts one of the latest industry trends of streamlining production, the new Volvo Concept Coupe is said to even provide a pointer to the first car that employs Volvo’s new SPA design, the all-new XC90 crossover due in 2014.

But for those even willing to postulate outside the box, the 2013 Volvo Concept Coupe sets the stage for the brand to reveal a new flagship coupe that could very much be in line with being a successor to the brand’s current C70.

The Volvo Concept Coupe was also used to showcase Volvo’s experimentation into gasoline plug-in hybrid powertrains, which features a 2.An emergency light is a battery-backed lighting device that comes on automatically when a building experiences a power outage.0L Drive-E gasoline engine (most likely a four-banger) designed with a supercharger and turbocharger. Until recently, both Herman Wallace and Albert Woodfox had been held in solitary confinement for 4 decades in Louisiana – longer than almost any other known prisoner in recent U.S. history. It’s long enough for one’s body to forget it ever knew anything else but four white walls and for the mind to be reshaped by extreme isolation. Juan Mendez, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture, says that after 15 days, further isolation can cause permanent psychological damage and constitute torture.

Herman has just been diagnosed with stage 5 liver cancer. Unless Governor Bobby Jindal of Louisiana grants him clemency, he may likely die in prison.

After decades in isolation, people experience hyper-anxiety, paranoia, insomnia, hallucinations,A solar bulb that charges up during the day and lights the night when the sun sets. emotional detachment, panic attacks and uncontrollable rage. Many start fights with guards just for human contact. Others cut themselves just to be taken out of their cells for a few days in the prison hospital.

I spent over a year in solitary confinement when I was held as a political hostage by the Iranian government from 2009 to 10. I experienced all of these reactions at various times throughout my isolation. In some cases, these symptoms have increased since my release. Almost three years later, I am still trying to shake the mental damage and loss that was inflicted upon me during those 410 days.

After spending nearly 41 years in a cramped cell, the cancer diagnosis led prison officials in July to transfer 71-year-old Herman to a ten-bunk prison dorm.An emergency light is a battery-backed lighting device that comes on automatically when a building experiences a power outage.

He can now open a door,” says Marina Drummer, who has been advocating on his behalf for the past 15 years. “He can walk from the dorm room into the dayroom without being shackled.”

After spending 23 hours a day isolated in a small cell akin to a coffin, this change is monumental.

In 1972, Albert and Herman, two young black men, were charged and convicted of the murder of prison guard Brent Miller, despite the fact that no DNA evidence linked them to the crime. They were locked in solitary: 23 hours a day alone in a small cell, and were denied any meaningful review of their continued isolation.

In the decades after the trial, significant flaws in the legal process have come to light. Evidence suggests that the key eye-witness was bribed by prison officials into giving statements against the men and that the state withheld evidence that pointed to Herman and Albert’s innocence. Potentially exculpatory evidence mysteriously went “missing” before the trial and more witnesses later recanted their testimony.

After Herman’s diagnosis became known, human rights groups around the country – most notably Amnesty International – have called for his release on compassionate and medical grounds. More than 46,000 people in the U.S. have called on Governor Jindal to release Herman Wallace in the months since his diagnosis; tens of thousands of appeals have also poured in from around the world.

Herman is not a dangerous criminal – he is a 71-year-old cancer patient who has already survived an unthinkable nightmare. His continued imprisonment serves no purpose: prison records demonstrate that he is no threat to himself or others. As his conviction continues to be challenged before the courts, his cancerous tumor continues to grow. Despite treatment, he does not have much time left.

I recently turned 35. Herman Wallace has survived more years being psychologically tortured in our prisons than I’ve even been alive. I think about him still waking up every morning, tired and sick,We turn your dark into light courtesy of our brilliant sun, solar street light, solar power generation. but still fighting for his life and his long-deserved freedom. As Herman’s health fails, we have to fight for him – and there’s not much time left.

President Barack Obama

It sounds like magic, far-out fiction, a California dream. Yet earnest scientists are hard at work on a new alchemy: brewing fuel for cars — synthetic gasoline — from little more than water and sunshine.

Mimicking the way plants turn sunlight and carbon dioxide in the air into energy and oxygen, the Joint Center for Artificial Photosynthesis at the California Institute of Technology is in a race to trump nature and slow global warming. Nate Lewis, a Caltech professor and solar energy research star, has a plan to remake fuel as we know it.

“If we couldn’t get to that, we wouldn’t be doing it,” Lewis said in an interview last month.

The effort is backed with $122 million of U.S. Energy Department funds and combines the talents of 120 scientists at Caltech; Stanford University; the University of California’s Berkeley,How does a solar charger work and where would you use a solar charger?Shop funtional and elegant solar lights, outdoor solar lighting, solar garden lights, path lights and decorative solar lights. Irvine and San Diego campuses; and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

Along with electric powertrains, vehicles that drive themselves and cars rented by the hour, it’s another disruption of the global auto industry that dates back to the 19th century.

Just a few years ago, all-electric cars seemed fantastic, too. Now Tesla Motors Inc. (TSLA), which makes only battery-powered vehicles, has a higher market value than some old-line automakers, such as Suzuki Motor Corp. (7269) and Fiat SpA. (F)
Two Leaps

To revolutionize transportation fuel, Lewis has a two-step plan. Really, it’s two leaps. We carry a extensive line of Parking Lot Lighting inventory.

First, the coalition aims to develop a system to make large amounts of hydrogen fuel using cheap solar-panel-like devices. Liquid or gaseous hydrogen, which can power super-clean fuel-cell cars, is needed for chemical plants and refineries.

Then comes the second leap: Applying that same research to a system that can blend the hydrogen fuel with carbon dioxide from the air, much as a plant does, to make liquid fuels that can power cars, heavy trucks, boats or aircraft. JCAP aims to get to that point by the mid-2020s, Lewis said.

Synthetic, carbon-free gasoline won’t come easy, quick or cheap.

Research labs worldwide are racing to find renewable alternatives to petroleum. Some are private endeavors; others are government-funded. While some seek to make fuel from algae, corn or other crops, Lewis argues that such solutions require too much water or land that will be needed for food production.
Innovation Race

Research projects like JCAP have the luxury of not having to satisfy investors’ short-term demands, said Pavel Molchanov, a Houston-based analyst for Raymond James & Associates Inc.

“Companies that rely on private capital, even venture capital, in most cases aim to be commercial within the next three years,” said Molchanov, who follows biofuel companies. “If we think about what private developers of biofuels are focusing on now, none of them have a commercialization road map that goes out to 2025.”

Startups such as KiOR Inc., Solazyme Inc., Ceres Inc., Gevo Inc. and Amyris Inc. have a lead over JCAP because they’re already commercializing biofuel alternatives to petroleum and grain-based ethanol.

What JCAP has going for it is the Energy Department, which deemed it an Energy Innovation Hub, one of three Manhattan Project-like efforts. Others are to improve nuclear power plants and make buildings more energy-efficient. With the government funding, Lewis can be methodical in search of a breakthrough.
Wright Brothers

“The first five years of JCAP, our goal is to show that this can be done; to make the pieces, components, to build an artificial photosynthetic system,” he said. That prototype “isn’t going to be commercializable,We have a great selection of blown glass backyard solar landscape lights and solar garden light. in the same way the Wright Brothers’ plane wasn’t a 747. We first have to show people there’s a there there.”

About five years after that, with “faster, better, cheaper” fuel-making technology, JCAP may be able to license its system to oil and energy companies, Lewis said.

The program is talking with potential industrial partners to help expand its analysis of promising “earth-abundant” materials needed for its solar-fuel distillery. Lewis declined to identify specific companies. JCAP’s technicians daily are testing hundreds of alloys made from metallic salts, seeking the optimal recipe of low-cost, light-absorbing materials and catalysts needed for hydrogen generation.

Urgency to increase low-carbon energy sources has intensified as extreme weather adds to concerns that heat-trapping gases in the atmosphere are making the Earth a less hospitable planet.

President Barack Obama, whose administration funded JCAP, signaled in June that U.S. action to curb carbon emissions will intensify with new steps to pare such pollution from power plants,A solar lantern uses this sunlight that is abundantly available to charge its batteries through a Solar Panel and gives light in nighttime. the biggest source of carbon dioxide emissions, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Transportation Fuels

Second is the use of petroleum-based fuel in transportation. Engines in autos, trucks, aircraft and ships produced 28 percent of the 6.7 million metric tons emitted by the U.S. in 2011, according to the EPA, trailing only electricity generation’s 33 percent. Obama also laid out a plan in 2011 to double vehicle fuel efficiency by 2025 to cut carbon pollution.

Carmakers are boosting vehicle efficiency with small, high-output engines; propulsion delivered by batteries; and even hydrogen fuel cells.

JPMorgan’s China hiring

US regulators are investigating the hiring practices of JPMorgan Chase in Hong Kong,The world’s most efficient and cost effective hid lights? in a move that could cast an unflattering light on the relationships between Wall Street banks and the sons and daughters of Chinese government officials.

JPMorgan disclosed in a recent regulatory filing that it has received a request from the US Securities and Exchange Commission “seeking information and documents relating to, among other matters, the firm’s employment of certain former employees in Hong Kong and its business relationships with certain clients”.The world’s largest independent online retailer for solar lighting, street lights & outdoor lighting fixtures.

A person familiar with the investigation said that it involves the bank’s hiring of Tang Xiaoning, son of a former Chinese banking regulator who is now chairman of the state-owned China Everbright Group, and Zhang Xixi, the daughter of a Chinese railway official.

A Beijing-based spokesperson for JPMorgan said the bank was fully co-operating with the US authorities but declined to comment further.

The investigation is likely to cause consternation on Wall Street and in the corridors of power in China, where hiring the sons and daughters of prominent politicians or business leaders is considered de rigueur as part of a system that places heavy emphasis on “guanxi,” or personal connections, as a way of securing new business.

In their rush to capitalise on China’s economic growth, virtually all the big Wall Street and European financial institutions with operations in the country have habitually hired “princelings”, as the children of senior Chinese officials are known.

Goldman Sachs once hired Jiang Zhicheng, grandson of the former Chinese president Jiang Zemin, for its direct private investment arm, for instance.

A senior Chinese official told the Financial Times that the Chinese government had not launched its own investigation into JPMorgan or its hiring practices in the country, but that the revelations are causing concern because the practice of hiring the children of senior officials to work at financial institutions is very common.

Some individual Chinese officials are worried their own children could also be named in media reports or in investigations in the US, the senior official said.

Two people familiar with the matter confirmed that Tang Xiaoning and Zhang Xixi had previously worked at JPMorgan and that Mr Tang left the company in December 2012. Attempts to reach Mr Tang and Ms Zhang were unsuccessful.

A spokesman for the SEC declined to comment on the investigation, which was first reported by the New York Times.Thank you for providing us with information to help us maintain street light.

US authorities have to date rarely investigated Wall Street’s business practices in China, though a former Morgan Stanley adviser was last year sent to prison after bribing a Chinese official to win lucrative real estate investments for the bank.

In recent years, foreign banks are said to have found it increasingly difficult to attract the offspring of the country’s most senior leaders thanks to the rise of a domestic private equity industry that provides lucrative opportunities for Chinese investors with powerful family backgrounds.

In private conversations, executives at western banks admit they are now more likely to hire the children of vice-ministers or provincial vice-governors, whereas a few years ago the parents of their recruits were usually minister level or above.

The investigation could add to JPMorgan’s recent regulatory woes. The investment bank faces a string of regulatory investigations related to its $6bn “London Whale” trading loss, as well as questions over its commodities and energy businesses.

ILFI Certifies DPR’s New Phoenix Regional Office

SmithGroupJJR designed the comprehensive renovation of the windowless, 1970s concrete block building, transitioning it into a model for sustainable adaptive reuse.

Located at the corner of 44th and Van Buren in a once declining area of Phoenix, the 16,533-square-foot storefront had most recently operated as an adult-themed boutique before standing vacant for three years. The eyesore building was purchased by DPR Construction, a national general contractor and construction manager, which was looking to build a highly-efficient, sustainable workplace and reaffirm its commitment to better the community in which it works.

Today,How are solar outdoor lighting products different from other lighting, like fluorescent or incandescent? DPR’s new building is an ultra-energy efficient and modern workplace that’s embraced by its employees and the community.

“Many building owners may think it’s impossible to turn an aging, neglected building into something highly sustainable – especially in an extreme climate like Phoenix. But that’s precisely what we’ve achieved,” said Mark Roddy, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, SmithGroupJJR design principal. The entire project was completed in less than 10 months and is the first Net Zero Energy Building SmithGroupJJR has designed.

Net Zero Energy facilities integrate a combination of energy-producing technologies like solar and wind, and implement efficient HVAC and lighting systems to reduce a building’s overall energy usage. To achieve Net Zero Energy Building Certification, a facility must demonstrate a net energy consumption of zero over the span of one year.

SmithGroupJJR incorporated a range of advanced, sustainable design solutions to achieve Net Zero Energy consumption, such as:

An 87-foot solar chimney enables a passive cooling system, releasing hot air out of the building while drawing cooler air in.They are called “solar” panels or solar module because most of the time, the most powerful source of light available is the Sun.Nearly 90 operable windows throughout the building work in tandem with the energy monitoring system to open and close based on indoor and outdoor temperatures.Eighty-two solar optical tubes, Solatubes harness light from rooftop domes and bring it into the workspace, nearly eliminating the need for artificial lighting.Twelve 8-foot diameter Big Ass Fans? circulate air flow throughout the office.Know about led high bay conversion kit and Bi-xenon HID kit.A “vampire” switch cuts off 90 percent of plug loads, which would otherwise continue to draw power at night when the building is unoccupied.Four evaporative Shower Towers direct water-cooled air inside, also helping to regulate building temperatures.Producing power for the building is a 78.96 kW photovoltaic-covered canopy over half of the parking lot. The system is capable of generating enough power to offset the building’s annual energy usage and is critical to allowing the facility to achieve Net Zero energy consumption.

Tracking the building’s energy production and consumption in real time is an online building dashboard, prominently on display in the office’s reception area. The new office building for DPR employees working in Phoenix is more than a sustainability powerhouse. Inside, SmithGroupJJR designed a “workplace of the future” environment, where employees share a common, open work environment void of enclosed, private offices. Unique, on-site amenities include a gym complete with men’s and women’s showers, a Zen Room for quiet breaks, and an 18-foot wine bar. A kitchen with café and two green-screened outside courtyards provide additional breakout venues. Video conferencing rooms, a learning lab, and a glass-walled Innovation Room with whiteboards and reconfigurable furniture encourage collaboration and teamwork. Rolling, glazed, garage-style doors can be raised to join the inside offices with an outside courtyard.

Since its completion in October 2011, the new DPR Phoenix Regional Office has become a living laboratory for the community, showcasing how to live and work sustainably in a desert environment. DPR has opened its building to host gatherings and meetings for a range of businesses and non-profit organizations. The company openly shares its building and the lessons that were learned during design and construction with audiences that include professional organizations, public and private programs, and school children of all ages.

“Blood Money” kicks

The apocalyptic hour of “Blood Money,” the final season premiere of AMC’s “Breaking Bad,” moves faster than entire seasons of this brilliant and diabolical series. The closing scene of the episode is the one fans have been waiting for for years, and one that would otherwise take this show another eight or 12 episodes to accomplish. (Neilsen reports that the final-season premiere averaged 5.9 million viewers on Sunday, almost double last year’s premiere slot. More details here.)
But remember, after “Blood Money,” only seven episodes remain, and “Breaking Bad” has a lot of business to tend to in those precious final hours. Season 5 part 2 is poised to be a breakneck finish for “Breaking Bad,” and a refusal to put its foot on the brake. But this speed doesn’t mean that series head Vince Gilligan and his writing team are merely dancing as fast as they can. “Blood Money” showcases “Breaking Bad” at its most carefully plotted and assembled — not to mention, inventively styled — as it digs deeply into the show’s mythology. (Don’t read further if you are not caught up on the series, as spoilers are ahead.)

off with the show’s most soul-searing cold open yet. In a flash forward, a bearded Walter White (Bryan Cranston) returns to his suburban home to retrieve the ricin he hid in a light fixture last season. His home is now empty and ravaged, grey and sickly, with the name HEISENBERG spray painted on the living room wall. The opener echoes that of season five, part 1, in which Walt, traveling under a pseudonym, reveals some seriously heavy weaponry in the trunk of his car. Putting these two timeline jumps together, we’re building toward an awful act of violence that likely won’t come until the series’ very end. Some haunting questions linger: Where are Skyler, Walt Jr. and — dear god — baby Holly? Who is the loose wire that Walt is going after, with the ricin and the gun?

Here’s what we did learn from the season premiere: Hank (Dean Norris) will be working to take down Walt, whose cancer is back, and Jesse (Aaron Paul) knows that Walt killed Gus’ (RIP) former henchman Mike but has no proof. This two-pronged setup will most certainly be the fulcrum of the final season, as both Hank and Jesse pursue any possible redemption for themselves. Most modern headlight designs include Wholesale HID Kit. And in the case of Jesse, it means getting out from under Walt’s thumb.

Though the bulk of this episode is all ominous portent — including “former business associate” Lydia’s unexpected appearance at the A1A car wash — and slow zooms (Hank’s stunned-senseless emergence from the bathroom), the fulcrum here is the final scene face-off between Walt and Hank. When Hank socks Walt behind the closed door of his garage, grabs him by the collar and spews, “It was you all along,” we can’t help but feel a potent spark of satisfaction as the whole bedrock of the show — a once-ordinary guy engineers a massive drug operation right under the nose of his DEA-agent brother-in-law — erupts. But then Walt says, “If you don’t know who I am, then maybe your best course would be to tread lightly,” and that moral blood-thirst curdles to dread.

A SERVING Newcastle police officer was accused yesterday of taking bribes and supplying a gun to former boxer Fortunato “Lucky” Gattellari.

NSW police confirmed that Senior Constable Mark Donohue is “subject to an ongoing departmental investigation”.

A spokesman said it would be inappropriate to comment further.

Giving evidence at the committal hearing of his former benefactor, Ron Medich, Gattellari said that, in 2010, he paid $2500 in cash to the police officer for a pistol.

What kind of officer would do that?” Winston Terracini, SC, for Mr Medich, asked.

“The kind who took bribes from Mr Medich,” said Gattellari, who added that the bribes were over deals involving Aboriginal land.

The court heard that the gun Constable Donohue provided was for Haissam Safetli, who was recently sentenced to six years’ jail for his role in the execution-style shooting of Michael McGurk.

The Scottish-born businessman was murdered in his car in front of his nine-year-old son in September 2009. Mr Medich,Shop funtional and elegant solar lights, outdoor solar lighting, solar garden lights, path lights and decorative solar lights.Soli-lite provides the world with high-performance solar roadway and solar street lighting solutions. a property tycoon, is alleged to have been the mastermind.

Gattellari, 63, said the gun he bought from Constable Donohue was not the murder weapon and was supplied after the killing of McGurk. He said he hid it in the back shelf of his office filing cabinet until Safetli came to get it.

When asked if he was concerned about what Safetli planned to do with it, Gattellari said: “Why should I be?”

The court heard “changing tyres” was the code Gattellari used for the murder. The former boxer was sentenced to seven years’ jail for his role in organising McGurk’s murder. He is now the Crown’s key witness.

Under cross-examination by Mr Terracini, Gattellari told Central Local Court that he didn’t keep records of his dealings on Mr Medich’s behalf because 90 per cent of them were illegal.

Gattellari was also questioned about his financial dealings with Queenslander Louie Gibson. Gattellari said he thought his friend was a “racing identity” rather than a drug dealer.

In 2008, Gibson was sentenced to 11 years’ jail for producing and trafficking the drug methylamphetamine.

The court also heard that hundreds of thousands of dollars, allegedly from Mr Medich’s investments in Gattellari’s electrical businesses, were handed over to Gattellari’s family without Mr Medich’s knowledge.

This car is easy to drive

Included was Acura’s all-wheel-drive system, which operates in front-drive during normal cruising, but automatically sends 25 percent of engine torque to the rear wheels during acceleration or when the system detects slipping of the front wheels. But under wet or slippery conditions, torque may be distributed 50/50 between front and rear.

This car is easy and fun to drive. It’s really effortless, with precise steering and handling (electric power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering, drive-by-wire throttle), especially on curvy neighbourhood streets and roads.

There’s also plenty of power from the 273-horsepower, 3.5-litre V-6 engine, which is connected to a six-speed automatic transmission with sequential sport shift and paddle shifters.

EPA ratings are 19 mpg city/27 highway, and there is a 16-gallon tank. I averaged 22 mpg during my test. No four-cylinder engine is offered for those who want better fuel economy, however.

The Tech Package (standard for this model) included navigation with voice recognition, AcuraLink with real-time traffic and weather, GPS-linked climate control (sensors track the sun’s position and intensity and the system compensates, automatically adjusting the temperature in each area accordingly), power tailgate, xenon HID headlights, fog lights, and the Acura/ELS premium surround-sound audio system.

The navigation system was relatively easy to program. It has a toggle-style controller on the dash and intuitive labeling of folders and pages, although I find a touch screen to be more time-efficient.

Our premium audio package has 10 speakers, AM/FM/DVD/CD/XM, MP3 playback, auxiliary input jack and USB interface, Dolby Pro Logic II, a harddisc drive, and a multi-view rear camera. It had wonderful sound, and there were speakers on the pillars behind the rear doors at head level, a speaker in the cargo area, and speakers on all doors including small speakers on the top of the front door panel near the windshield pillars.

The heating/air conditioning controls were simple and user-friendly, grouped together in the lower front console – which, by the way, is part of an attractive new design with a metallic accent dividing the two-tone dash.

This is the second generation of the RDX, and it’s much quieter than before, thanks to Thinsulate noise-absorbing material on the inner fenders, spare-tire pan, and door lighting housings.

Acura also chose Michelin Primacy MXM4 all-season tires because of their quiet performance, and used a floating sub-frame with heavily reinforced mounting points in the front, which also reduces road noise. The ride was quite smooth and pleasant.

Front passengers had 38.7 inches of headroom and 42 inches of legroom, while rear passengers had 38.1 inches of headroom and 38.3 inches of legroom. The rear seatback folded 60/40 via handles on the side of the cargo area near the liftgate or straps on the seat back, which increased the 28.3 cubic feet of cargo space to more than 60 cubic feet.

Features such as the universal garage/gate opener, auto-dimming rearview mirror, Bluetooth hands-free link, steering-wheel-mounted controls (audio, phone, voice commands, cruise and information panel) helped make driving the RDX a pleasure.

The tester came with a power/tilt moon roof, heated/power outside mirrors with turn signals, and remote entry with a security system. Other standard features included electronic stability control with traction control, tire-pressure monitoring and daytime running lights. For more information, please visit www.hmhid.com.

Jetta Hybrid

Filed under: LED Lamp — Tags: — solaroutdoorlight @ 3:10 am

When the Jetta Hybrid arrived at my home, I took a look at the window sticker in the glove box and the headline from VW read: “The Hybrid for Turbo Fans.” That couldn’t be any truer.

VW took the hybrid concept a step further, making the already-popular Jetta a turbo/hybrid vehicle. It became available to the public in December 2012, so it’s new.

The 1.4L turbo engine and 16-volt electric motor, which produce 170 horsepower, combine with front-wheel drive to make this car great.

The power is dished out through a seven-speed automatic transmission, but there isn’t a normal tachometer like you may be used to seeing. It’s more like an “mpg gauge” where you can see exactly how efficient you are being with the accelerator. A typical hybrid display shows you where the energy is being applied at any given moment. This gauge is the only difference from a normal Jetta gauge cluster.

On the outside are some unique wheels that resemble turbine blades and “hybrid” badges on the front fenders. Up front are cool LED daytime running lights with adaptive HID headlamps and around back are LED tail lamps. All of the VW logos on the car have a thin blue ring behind them to distinguish this as a hybrid from the other VWs.

Inside is the same Jetta you’ve come to love and expect.

Comfortable seats, a good ride and decent handling are still staples of this midsized sedan. Driving around town you’ll find the hybrid is more “electric” than gas, but the gas engine seems to run a decent amount no matter what.

Once you step on the throttle and head down an on-ramp you will feel why this car is going to be popular. The revs jump and the turbo spools to provide a solid push that takes you to highway speeds very quickly. Once at highway speed, the car maintains cruise control well and switches to EV mode when the terrain allows, saving you fuel.

In fact, any time you feel the need for extra power the turbo is within reach and the power transfer is fairly smooth. It helps to drive this hybrid a little more reserved than you would normally to squeeze all the MPG you possibly can.

I think this car will be well received for those looking to get decent mileage while standing out in the crowd and not sacrificing interior space or performance.

For the most part it resembles a Jetta GLI, has all the interior room — minus some trunk space where the batteries are located — and has a turbo engine with good power. I had some issues with the tire pressure monitor system light staying on when all the tires were inflated to the proper pressure.

VW rates the hybrid at 45 mpg combined, and I was able to manage 36 mpg with several trips into Pittsburgh and back to Beaver.

With the fuel tank being only 11.8 gallons, even at 36 mpg you will fill up frequently.

The sticker price is $31,975 which is on par with other hybrid cars, but the sleek exterior and great all-around performance may sway your opinion.

Lexus ES300h Hybrid

I enjoyed the ride in any of the modes thanks to the fully independent suspension system.  Up front is a MacPherson strut setup, gas-charged shocks, an anti-roll bar and opposite-wound coil springs that help with straight-line stability at high speeds.  The revised rear suspension features dual-link MacPherson struts and an anti-roll bar to keep body lean to a minimum.  The new rear suspension geometry and improved shock absorber damping characteristics further enhance ride comfort when traveling over poorly paved road surfaces.

Giving back more fun-to-drive excitement is the increased body rigidity that is achieved through the use of more lightweight, high-tensile strength steel, added bracing and more spot welds.  Airflow around and underneath the new ES 300h are underbody panels, a front spoiler, deep side extensions, a rear spoiler and rear diffuser.  It also helps improving stability at high speeds, increases fuel economy and reduces drag.

The co-efficient of drag is just 0.27.  The new ‘L’ design motif of the 300h is reflected in the LED daytime running lamps and combination rear LED lamps.  Foglamps are integrated into the sculpted lower front bumper fascia.  The ES 300h also feature an exclusive rear design with hidden exhaust pipe for a clean look.  Other details specific to the hybrid include blue badging and exclusive 17X7 aluminum alloy wheels wrapped with Bridgestone 215/55R17 inch Turanza low-rolling resistance all-season tires.

Slowing the all-new ES300h down from speed are large four-wheel disc brakes that are regenerative making electric power that is transferred back into the battery pack.  Up front are 11.6 inch vented discs clamped with dual-piston calipers while in the rear are 11 inch solid discs clamped with single-piston calipers.  Keeping control of the car during severe braking situations, like when driving on wet or slick pavement are standard ABS, EBD and BA.  Standard Traction Control and Vehicle Stability Control systems work with the braking systems to ensure the car stops quickly and straight.

The second-generation Remote Touch Interface (RTI) allows you to operate the climate, audio, phone controls, optional navigation system and more.  The screen menus are selected with a controller (like a computer mouse) located on the center console.  RTI also reduces eye and hand movement, helping to decrease effort and distraction.  It takes a little to get used to but it is really neat and intuitive.  Lexus Enform provides seamless connectivity with Bing search, iHeartRadio, OpenTable, Pandora, Yelp and Facebook Places through compatible smart phones.  The standard Lexus Premium Sound system features eight-speakers with automatic sound leveler, in-dash CD player, USB/iPod connectivity, and an integrated SiriusXM satellite radio receiver.

Other standard features inside includes NuLuxe seating and piano black trimmed interior, electrochromic auto-dimming rearview mirror, electrochromic heated outside mirrors, one-touch open/close sunroof, automatic dual-zone climate control system Bluetooth technology, USB audio plug, power windows all express up/down, power door locks, Lexus Personalization settings, carpeted floor mats, four-grab handles, dual map lamps, push button start/stop, intermittent windshield  wipers/washers, dual lighted vanity mirrors, dual cupholders on the center console with a padded armrest and deep storage box, rear pull-down armrest with dual cupholders, remote trunk release and remote fuel filler door.  My test ES 300h came with the optional HID headlights, heated front seats, Hard Disk Drive Navigation system with backup camera, voice command.  Click on their website www.hmhid.com for more information.
